What are the basic qualifications?

For most schools, the basic qualifications are as follow:
- 4 year university degree from an accredited university
- A native English speaker
- No Crinimal Record
- Responsible and enthusiastic in teaching
- No previous teaching experience required

Do I need to provide a Criminal Record check?

Yes. In Canada, it's called "Police Certificate." This This certificate is available for Visa applications, foreign travel, and foreign work permits and is only issued after a search is conducted by the National Repository for Criminal Records in Canada.
You can request the certificate at RCMP and the fee for this service is $50.

Who pays for an airfare ticket?

First option - An employer or agent prepays and purchases your airfare. Second option - In case an employer or agent can't prepay it, you will be reimbursed on top of your salary.

Is there training before I start teaching?

Most schools provide training at the beginning in order for you to understand their curriculum, teaching style, and how to manage classroom, etc. Some schools may also provide training and teaching assessments throughout your contract.

How many students in a class?

This depends on the type of school you apply for.
Public schools have usually between 20 ~ 35 students per class when a private language schools have 5 ~ 15 students in a classroom.

Is there a set curriculum, or do I make up my own lessons?

Some schools may have a particular amount of content that must be taught within the semester. But the teacher may have some flexibility on how he or she teaches the content.
Some smaller schools will give you lots of freedom and allow you to creat your own lessons when larger schools usually have a set curriculum and the teacher will follow it.
It will also depend on whether you are teaching at a public or private language school.

Am I responsible for paying taxes in Korea?

Taxes in Korea are very minimal. As a teacher you will be responsible for paying 3-5% of your monthly income. The school you work for will automatically deduct the taxes from your salary; therefore you do not have to worry about filing papers or documents with the Korean government.

How much will I get paid to teach ESL in Korea?

Depending on where you are teaching in Korea and how much experience you have, salaries range from 1.8 million Won - 2.5 million Won monthly. Salaries of 2.4 to 2.5 are harder to come by and they are generally offered to teachers with previous experience as an ESL teacher or to applicants with Masters degrees in English.
